Inclusion Uganda is non-governmental organization that works with persons with intellectual disabilities and their families. Inclusion Uganda was established in 1983 by a group of parents and professionals of children with intellectual disabilities who came together to find a common solution to the problems that were affecting their children both at home and their communities.
The organization started with parents in Kampala but later spread put to various parts of the county. In 2003, the organization changed its name to Inclusion Uganda. Inclusion Uganda is affiliated to Inclusion International and Inclusion Africa
People with intellectual disabilities are disproportionately affected by the country’s problems such as poverty, poor health and lack of information. Thus they are consistently excluded from import decision making processes that affect them.
Inclusion Uganda therefore believes that persons with intellectual disabilities have the ability, will and creativity to do things differently in their lives and communities. We believe that given the right support and information, persons with intellectual disabilities are an asset to their communities and the country at large.
Intellectual disabilities include among others; cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism, fragile X syndrome, Prada Willi syndrome and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
To advocate for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities through public awareness, civic leadership, engagement and community participation.
A society where the rights of people with intellectual disabilities are observed protected and promoted
Inclusion Uganda cultivates a bottom-up approach focusing on attitude change amongst persons with intellectual disabilities, their families and communities as well as systematic change in policies and regulations geared towards a more supportive environment for persons with intellectual disabilities. We deliver programs to over 18 districts in Uganda and we have established a Local Executive Committee in each district. We also work hand in hand with field workers and volunteers operating in their respective districts.
Leveraging in the Local Executive Committees, field workers and volunteers, we are creating a network of leaders and rights activists advocating for the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities in their communities. Inclusion Uganda also advocates for the engagement of persons with intellectual disabilities in decisions and policies that affect them. We directly and indirectly deliver programs in 18 districts and we expect to significantly expand our reach in the future.
